Default DVD burner fault

Hi, whenever i try to use nero or xtodvd the programs do not detect my (E) dvd burner drive, the only option i have is to burn it to a image (ISO). Whenever i use clone dvd or wmp i have no trouble at all, i can use the drive for playback okay and also the driver for the burner is the latest. I have used these programs every day but overnight two of my programs can only be saved as a image. Any thoughts? thanx Kev.
btw, i have a hp pavilion pc and use xp as my o/s and ie as my browser.

In such cases I usually jsut delete the drive from the device manager, delete the driver and reboot. Windows will reinstall the drive and then i download and install teh latest driver. In many cases, that will resolve the problem.

If that doesn't work, I would double check all cable connections for the drive inside the machine. I would disconnect and reconnect all the cables to make sure all the connections are tight.
